Feature Film Credits
Over The Hill - 2024 - Sound Mixer
Just two weeks after wrapping Holy Ghost I was in Columbus, GA working on Over The Hill. This one was originally slated for Augusta, but was moved due to the extensive damage from hurricane Helene. The story centers around a young man who moves in with his Jewish grandparents after a bad breakup in order to find himself. It was fantastic working with director Mike Doyle and all of the cast, including Academy Award winner F. Murray Abraham. This was a brisk 15 day shoot. On the gear side, I incorporated the Sound Devices Nexus Go into my setup. The Nexus Go is a wireless receiver that really benefited my workflow. It allows me to quickly turn on and off transmitters remotely, saving battery life. I can easily adjust gain, transmitter power, character names, and much more. Plus all the audio stays in the digital realm for the best possible quality. It docks to the top of my Sound Devices 888 and allows me to quickly go from my cart to a bag, which I did several times for our driving sequences.
Holy Ghost - 2024 - Sound Mixer
2024 has been an interesting year of ups and downs. I’ve been working pretty consistently, but mostly commercial work. In May I worked on a film called The Observance, but I only did a week as sound mixer then I moved over to the camera team, so I didn’t list it here. Holy Ghost came along shortly after, then got delayed, then finally started shooting in September, right before hurricane Helene came and ravaged Augusta, where we were shooting. This wasn’t even close to the only difficulty with this movie though… This was definitely a troubled production that got started on the wrong foot. We went through 3 DPs. I started with my boom op Joshua, then a bunch of us on the crew quit the production. They tried a new mixer for a day or two, then hired me back as a solo mixer (no boom operator). By that time, the production had slimmed down to a size that better suited the director’s shooting style. Attitudes seemed to be checked, and the rest of the production was much better. Ultimately it felt like a short film production that lasted 15 days. Holy Ghost and The Observance were the first features I did with my new Sound Devices 888, which is a BEAST of a mixer/recorder. It really is a fantastic tool that has opened up a lot of workflow improvements as well as a fully digital path from the transmitters.
Five Star Murder - 2023 - Sound Mixer
Five Star Murder was another production brought to Augusta by producer Mark Crump. It was a relatively short run, and all but one day of it was at the same hotel. In that way, it was pretty good. But there were some things that made it tough- small rooms and hallways mostly. We had quite a few nights and some long days, including some stunt and SFX work, which is always interesting but necessarily slow. I enjoyed the crew, a lot of whom were from Augusta and I’ve worked with before. Of course my main man Joshua Timmerman was back as boom op. Aside from some new Ultimate Ears in-ear monitors, I didn’t really use any different or new equipment on this one. For the most part it was smooth sailing! 5SM is out now, and you can watch it here: https://tubitv.com/movies/100006501/five-star-murder
Mr. Sleep - 2023 - Sound Mixer
Mr. Sleep is a low budget slasher horror movie shot in Augusta, GA with a lot of the same cast and crew from Applewood. This might be the film with the least amount of pre-production I’ve worked on, but from my perspective everything went really well. My regular boom op Joshua Timmerman was only available the first four days of an eleven day shoot, so the rest of the time I was a one-man-band. This is certainly not new territory for me, as that’s how I work most of the time for everything aside from features. Luckily the character count was pretty low, and nothing proved to be too challenging. We had some late nights and some cold temperatures, but I got to work alongside some of my best friends and I made some new ones, so altogether I enjoyed it.
A Christmas Open House - 2022 - Sound Mixer
A Christmas Open House, or “Mistletoe Flip” as it was titled during production, was my fifth feature as a sound mixer. This one was for Discovery+ and it was another Christmas movie. We shot most of it in the Covington, GA area with a few days in Laurel, Mississippi. Gear wise, I upgraded to the A10 rack and added another receiver, which gives me a total of 8 channels of wireless. I also tried the Sound Devices MixPre 10 II on this one. I like the additional channels it gave me, as well as the ability to use the Korg control surface for faders. I do, however, feel like the MixPre is only a stepping stone on my way to either an 888 or a Scorpio. Overall, me and my boom op Joshua are really starting to get dialed in and work efficiently. We had some long days on this one, but the cast and crew were great to work with. The movie looks and sounds great! It was released on Discovery+ on November 11th, 2022. Christmas Party Crashers- 2022 - Sound Mixer
Christmas Party Crashers was my fourth feature as a sound mixer. Once again, we shot here in lil ol’ Augusta. This was a very small movie in almost every way- scale, shooting days, budget, crew size, etc. But a relatively simple script meant a relatively simple production. I used my new Schoeps CMC641 in a Cinela OSIX mount, which was fantastic. I also ended up with two additional Sound Devices A20-mini transmitters. I’ve really grown to appreciate them for their small size, outstanding sound quality, and the ability to control gain remotely. This was also the debut of my new Blackbird Carts Night Hawk follow cart. This cart basically holds all the mics, IEMs, slates, and other tools in an orderly fashion. It’s heavy, but it’s worked out well so far. The biggest downside to this shoot was the last week, where we were moving into overnights and I ended up with a pretty bad cold. Luckily this shoot wasn’t much longer or I would have been in trouble! CPC was released on BET+ on November 17, 2022. You can watch it here: https://www.bet.plus/movie/christmas-party-crashers
The Hill- 2021 - Sound Mixer
The Hill was my third feature as a sound mixer. It was also shot here in my home town of Augusta. This movie has been the biggest of my career so far, in terms of budget, number of characters, shooting locations, shooting days, and just about every other measure. I took the opportunity to stretch my legs a bit with two more channels of wireless (the fabulous Sound Devices A20-Minis) and a new Blackbird sound cart. Overall, the experience was challenging, but often quite rewarding. We shot a ton of baseball stuff to start out, often going late into the very cold nights. The second half of the shoot was much different, focused on our younger actors and less sports. Joshua Timmerman crushed it on the boom for me once again. In retrospect, I should have insisted on a sound utility for this one. The Hill was released in theaters nationwide on August 25th, 2023, making it my first film to be released in theaters!
Applewood - 2021 - Sound Mixer
Applewood was my second feature as a sound mixer. It was shot in my home town of Augusta, and it was mostly a local cast and crew. The budget and overall production was much smaller than Agent Game, but I’d say it was more fun. I’m good friends with the DP, Denton Adkinson, and I knew most of the crew already. The camera team was great fun to work beside. Joshua Timmerman slayed the boom again for me. Gear-wise I kept pretty much the same setup, but ended up adding the RF Venue Diversity antenna system to give me significantly better performance from my wireless mics. We shot mostly in the same house that we used for Awaken, so I felt right at home. This was a great experience and I cannot wait to work with all of these folks again! I’m hoping that this film finds a distributor and gets released soon!
Agent Game - 2021 - Sound Mixer
Agent Game was huge for me. This was my first feature film as a sound mixer. It was a quick ramp up to production, and I had some investing to do. I was still in my bag setup, which ended up being beneficial for our second week filming mostly inside a small jet. I invested in a set of Lectrosonics wireless with two DPA 6060 lavs, which are really awesome. I also bought a second interior mic so that I could try to get off-camera dialogue on the same mic as on-camera dialogue. I think this will prove helpful when they edit some of the scenes with lots of improvised dialogue. We hit the ground running- our first two days of my first feature as a mixer and we were shooting with Mel Gibson! After that we had a good group of actors including Adan Canto (Designated Survivor), Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend’s Wedding), Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter), Katie Cassidy (Arrow), and Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips). There were a TON of stunts and explosions. Overall, I had a great time, and I feel confident that we delivered great audio. This was the first movie to be released. It became available on VOD on April 8th, 2022.
Awaken - 2020 - Boom Op
Awaken was my first full feature as a boom operator. I worked for sound mixer Viktor Weiszhaupt. The movie was a ton of fun for me. I learned a lot on this one. We wrapped very close to the COVID lockdown, but thankfully made it through the shoot without incident. Viktor and I have similar gear, so I felt pretty comfortable working with him. Working with Lance Henrikson (Aliens) and Tobin Bell (Saw) were definitely the highlights on this one.
One Heart - 2019 - Utility/Boom Op
My first experience on a feature film set was an odd one… we were doing 8 days of additional filming for a movie called One Heart at Augusta’s LEC, a decommissioned jail that’s perfect for filming in. The sound mixer, “Father Dave” was quite a character (we’ll leave it at that…). I started as an unpaid intern, trying to soak up knowledge and experience. Later I would be brought on to the payroll. When the boom op missed a couple of days, I stepped in and boomed. Overall, I’m glad I had the opportunity. I’m beginning to wonder if this film will ever actually be released, though.
